How to Prevent Household Mould

One thing you should be doing right now to avoid mould growth.

Mould can be a cringe-worthy word. While some mould has been used for good (penicillin, cheese, organic compost), undetected household mould is never a good thing. Mould spores can spread exponentially, and complete eradication is often a costly challenge.

Mould can produce allergens, irritants and is important to eliminate from any inhabited space in a timely manner.

What is the #1 reason for mould?
Heightened humidity in the home is the main culprit of mould growth.

How does mould appear?
Mould often results from water damage, flooding or sewer backups. Mould can grow on clothing, carpets and on your walls.

Stopping mould at the source
Moisture control is a top priority in mitigating mould.

One thing you can do to prevent mould right now is reduce condensation. Keep the temperature in your home warm and consistent. During damper months, the recommended temperature is 20°C for your living room, 23°C for your bathroom and children's rooms, and 16°C for your bedroom and kitchen. It’s also important to ensure your home has good air circulation, while keeping bathroom and kitchen hood fans in good functioning condition.

Another easy way to prevent mould is by moving your plants away from windows. While plants provide us with oxygen and a connection to nature in the home, they also contribute to mould-loving condensation.
