With the current COVID-19 situation evolving daily, your safety and health continues to be our number one priority.
We are committed to the safety of our community and ensuring everyone has a safe place to inhabit. We are reducing our operation to essential emergency services only and have strict safety protocols and procedures in place to minimize exposure and contain the spread of COVID-19. Additional personal protective equipment will be worn on all jobs sites to ensure the safety of our staff and customers (until further notice). Find local updates here.
As you celebrate spring in self-isolation, now is also a good time to inspect the health of your physical home. Every year, our founder Marek Ahlsten shares his top tips and best practices for safe spring maintenance.
Marek recommends to:
1. Check your home for any changes that may have occurred over the winter. Take a tour around the exterior of your house noting any changes you see from last summer. Take pictures to help you track any potential changes around the foundation, siding and roof.
2. Clean out your gutters and eaves. Over winter, gutters can fill with leaves and debris. Clearing out debris ensures gutters won’t be clogged and water can drain effectively, avoiding the walls and foundation of your home. Check gutters regularly throughout spring months to avoid build up. If your gutters are filling up quickly, it might be time to call a local tree service company - such as Sechelt Tree Service.
3. Reverse winter prep. Turn outdoor taps back on and make sure crawl space vents that you closed for winter are back open. Check hoses to ensure nothing froze and was damaged over winter, and confirm that no hose bibs are leaking.
4. Perform an in-home deep clean. Dirt and allergens can take up residence on window tracks, curtains or blinds, baseboards and underneath bed frames. Doing a regular wipe-down and sweep of these areas can help alleviate seasonal allergies and the need for a major clean down the road.
5. Check your hot water tank. Make it part of your spring routine to check for obvious leaks and schedule maintenance if required. Many insurance policies won’t cover tanks over 10 years old, so ensure yours is still covered under your plan.
6. Renew and update your policies. It’s a great habit to review, renew and update your insurance policies once a year ensuring you’re aware of any changes.
7. Check your fire alarms. Test your smoke detectors once, if not twice a year. This simple exercise could be a lifesaver.
8. Clean your window frames. Mould loves moisture, and window sills are a compatible setting for mould proliferation. Cleaning your window frames with a mould control product can help eliminate mould growth and damage.
